A tracked dumper (also called a tracked mini dumper or track barrow) moves spoil, muck, stone, sand and building materials across ground where a wheelbarrow is too slow and a wheeled dumper would sink. Here's what to look for when buying one in Ireland.
What a tracked dumper is for
- Carrying soil and spoil away from a trench while a mini digger keeps digging.
- Bringing hardcore, gravel, sand and blocks to where they're needed on site or in a back garden.
- Working on soft fields, wet sites and slopes, where rubber tracks spread the weight and grip far better than wheels.
- Mucking out and moving feed on farms and small-holdings.
Tracks or wheels?
Rubber tracks are the right choice for Irish ground for most of the year: they don't sink in soft soil, they grip on slopes and they do much less damage to lawns. Wheeled dumpers are faster on hard, level yards and roads, but struggle once the ground gets wet.
Questions to ask before you buy
- **Capacity:** how much will you move per load? Match the skip to the job and to the digger loading it.
- **Width:** measure your narrowest gate or passage. Compact dumpers are built to fit where a wheelbarrow goes.
- **Tipping:** a standard front tip is simplest; a high-tip dumper can empty straight into a skip or trailer; a swivel skip tips to either side in tight spaces.
- **Self-loading:** some dumpers have a loading shovel, so one person can load and move material without a digger.
- **Engine:** petrol is light and simple; diesel is better for heavy, all-day use.
- **Transport:** check its weight against your trailer and towing vehicle.
A dumper and a mini digger work best together
The digger digs and loads; the dumper carries. For trenching, foundations and landscaping, the pair can save hours of barrowing on every job. See our mini digger buying guide and mini digger sizes to choose the digger to go with it.
