Buying a mini digger (mini excavator) in Ireland comes down to four questions: what jobs you'll do, how you'll move it, how many hours it will work, and which attachments you need. This guide walks through each one and shows where the Rippa range fits.
1. Start with the jobs, not the machine
- Garden landscaping, trenching for drainage or cables, fencing and post holes, clearing a site for a shed or patio: a micro or 1-tonne mini digger does all of this and fits through narrow access.
- Farm and small-holding work — drains, yard repairs, moving muck and stone: a 1.5 to 2-tonne machine gives more reach and stability.
- Groundworks, foundations, site preparation and plant hire: a 3 to 5-tonne machine digs deeper, lifts more and works all day.
2. Plan how you'll transport it
Most buyers tow their mini digger on a plant trailer. The heavier the machine, the bigger the trailer and towing vehicle you need. In Ireland a standard category B licence covers a trailer up to 750 kg, or a heavier trailer as long as the car and trailer together stay within 3,500 kg; above that you need a B+E licence. Always check the current rules with the Road Safety Authority (www.rsa.ie) before you buy.
3. Hours of use: DIY / ECO or PRO?
